Pen and Ink

Picture
In this class we will be exploring the exciting small pieces of art we can create with simple tools and materials. Pen and ink, colored with a wash of any water media, will capture sweet little scenes anywhere - and keep you in practice! In addition we will embellish our pieces with text by using simple calligraphy, and if there is interest, I will also introduce you to the wonderful technique of goldleafing to add that extra sparkle to any artwork!

Bring reference photos of what you want to sketch or choose from the assortment I will bring along.

Minimal art supplies needed:
-Pencil and eraser
-Pen, calligraphy pen, ink pen, microliner or similar
-Mixed media paper or sturdy card stock
-Your favorite water media: watercolor, acrylics or gouache
In some classes I incorporate calligraphy and goldleafing. I will provide all goldleafing supplies so you don't have to go to the expense of buying everything just to try it out. Doing the goldleafing will be an extra $15 per student.

If you are interested in the travel kit I use everywhere, here are the links:
Small watercolor paper sketchbook  48 pages
Small tin/enamel container
Faber Castell pens (4)
Faber Castell pens (8)
Calligraphy ink pen with nib Speedball, this one is prone to leaking, but has a nice rich flow of ink
Calligraphy ink pen with nib Manuscript, this one is sparse on ink which can get a bit frustrating, but definitely won't leak
Cheap set of craft brushes with small handles
Synthetic brush with water reservoir can be used instead of the craft brushes above if you are constrained with space
Gouache paint set not necessary, if you prefer and already have watercolors or acrylics
These items are NOT necessary for this class, but are really nice to have when you get into this mode of painting,  and want a small kit handy for everyday sketching or traveling. I will show you how I use mine and give you more ideas.

Student feedback
-Miss you, Ruth, and appreciate you everyday for giving me this new love!! G.H. 2020
-The last time I had a drawing class was in high school. I have always been afraid to try. I can thank you for my new obsession. Also, I think I'm getting a German accent. C.T. 2020
-I also want to let you know you are a inspiration to us. When things quiet down I will keep a sketch book me at all times. My son has also been inspired. Wish art could be contagious and not this virus. V.F. 2020
-You are such a wonderful instructor!! J.B. 2019
-You have an amazing reputation and I am looking forward to your class! M.H. 2019
-I’m sad I’ll miss our last class. But Belize calls! And I’m taking my sketch pad!!  I have learned so much from you and appreciate you sharing all your knowledge and skills. I look forward to becoming a better Artist with more guidance from you and others at the Workshop.  V.B. 2019

- I knew I was going to like pen and ink but...wow...I love it!  I have been working on designs for my Christmas cards.  I really don't send many so it shouldn't be a huge undertaking.  Thank you so much for sharing your expertise...this class has ignited a spark in me...and I just love all of the information you share with us.  Thank you!
